The Portage Area School District recognizes that a child’s education is a responsibility shared by the school and family during the entire period the child spends in school. To support the goal of the school district to educate all students effectively, the schools and parents/caregivers must work as knowledgeable partners.
Although parents/caregivers are diverse in culture, language, and needs, they share the school’s commitment to the educational success of their children. This school district and the schools within its boundaries, in collaboration with its parents/caregivers, shall establish programs and practices that enhance parent/caregiver involvement and reflect the specific needs of students and their families.
To this end, the Portage Area School District supports the development, implementation, and regular evaluation of a parent/caregiver involvement program in each school, which will involve parents/caregivers at all grade levels in a variety of roles. The parent/caregiver involvement programs will be comprehensive and coordinated in nature. They will include, but not limited to, the following items of successful parent/caregiver involvement programs.
The Portage Area School District will:
1.Involve parents/caregivers in the joint development of the Title I Plan by the presentation and discussion of the Plan during the Title I Parent Advisory Council meetings, at the Annual Spring Meeting, and by having parents/caregivers complete parent surveys at the meetings.
2.Involve parents/caregivers in the process of school review and improvement during the meetings of the Title I Parent Advisory Council and at the Annual Spring Meeting.
3.Provide technical assistance and support to schools in planning and implementing effective parent involvement activities by gathering information on the annual needs assessment and presenting state and local assessment information.
4.Build the schools’ and parents’/caregivers’ capacity for parent involvement by providing the Schoolwires website for parents, by holding parent involvement meetings/workshops/trainings, and through the monthly distribution of the Home and School Connection newsletter.
5.Coordinate Title I parent involvement activities with other programs such as Head Start and the private preschool/kindergarten by inviting their personnel and participants to parent training sessions, parent meetings, and any other parent involvement activities.
6.Conduct with parents an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parent involvement policy during the fall Parent Advisory Council Meeting. The district will assess how much parent involvement has increased by the attendance at the parent meetings. The district will also look at the barriers to parental participation that needs to be addressed by reviewing the responses to parent surveys.
7.Use the findings of the evaluation to design strategies for school improvement and to revise parental involvement policies by planning parent involvement activities that would meet the needs of the schools and the parents.
